1. Why So Many Changes? Are They Bored?
Amazon used to be simple: write a book, upload it, hit publish, and done. Now it feels like every time you log into KDP, there’s a new checkbox, policy, or popup asking if your cover is accessible to Martians. Are they bored? Maybe. But more likely, they’re reacting to lawsuits, regulations, and trying to cover themselves from every possible angle. The result? Creators feel like they're navigating a government portal, not a platform built for authors.
2. Is Amazon Still a Free Democracy?
At first, KDP felt like digital freedom — anyone could publish, be discovered, and compete with big names. Now, it’s starting to feel more like a gated community with rules written in legalese. You can still publish, yes — but getting seen, earning royalties, and even uploading without tripping over new requirements is starting to feel more controlled than creative. The "open" platform is still open… but not as free as it once was.
3. Why Is Amazon Pressuring Everyone?
Because Amazon isn’t trying to help you make money. It’s trying to avoid trouble. Accessibility rules, keyword limitations, AI-content disclosures — it’s all about avoiding future backlash. Understandable, but at what cost? Selling books used to be fun. Now it feels like paperwork. Many indie authors are starting to ask: “If this feels like a job… why not just get paid for a real one?”
